One of the great things about Thailand, over any other country I have visited, is both the quality of the street food and the availability of the stuff! No matter what time you get the munchies, you are pretty much guaranteed you’ll be able to go out and find some noodles to munch on.
Last night while working late, I got the midnight munchies, which can only mean one thing; I went out and got some delicious Egg noodles with roasted red pork. The roasted red pork is more Chinese than Thai, but you often see elements of Chinese food in Thai cuisine. This dish should not be mistaken for My Egg Noodles – my own version. :)
To order this dish, one must say “bum-mee moor deng” which simply translates to egg noodles (bum-mee), pork (moor) and red (deng). The dish normally comes with a chicken stock based soup, but if you wanted it without the soup (which is equally delicious) you just say “heng” which means dry. Another option is the size… if you don’t mention the size you’ll just be given the standard portion size, however if your feeling really peckish, you can add “piss-ed” which means “special” – a larger portion of the dish. Going “piss-ed” normally costs an additional 5฿.
There are around 5 dishes that I eat on a regular basis while in Thailand, and this is defiantly one of them. The dish is extremely cheap – about 30฿ (about 60p), quick and readily available.
There’s something very pleasing being able to see the kitchen and the chef prepare your food when eating out, don’t you think?
Want to add/enhance the flavor? No worries. Here we have dry chilly, sugar, vinegar and grounded nuts.
Doesn’t this look so yummy? The Thai version of comfort food :) Here I’ve added some dry chilly and sugar – I like mine slightly sweet with a spicy kick to it!
Have you tried Egg Noodles in Thailand before? What did you make of it? Also, I’d be interested to learn what your fav street food is?
That looks awesome, I loved it but didn’t eat as much as I should have, I went on a bit of a spring roll rampage, I think I did find the best ones in BKK though so not all was lost.
So where’s the best spring rolls in BKK Dan?
Chak Kraphong Rd between Khao San and Rambuttri, that sounds like I looked real hard and far, lol. I think it was the homemade sweet chili sauce that made it.
In Cambodia you can find the best egg and bacon burger ever outside Heart of Darkness, not very Khmer but damn its the guy who does them is a really friendly bloke.
Dan, you’ve inspired me to write a post on the best of the best foods in Asia :) It’s not often, by from time to time you eat something that is just far superior to others you have tried before… I know a good few places like that and will write up on them when I get a chance!
There are two vendors that I always seek out in Bangkok.
The first is near Wat Pho and serves my favorite breakfast. Broth, sliced egg, rice noodles, crispy duck, and pork. I put a photo of it here(it is geotagged so you can find it!):

I’ve never seen this dish before, but it sure looks good! I’ve been told it looks like gwoi-te-ol bed par-low and a place in town sells it… that’s my breakie sorted out for tomorrow :)
I got a bit over-zealous in adding my comment.
Anyway…
The second is an early dinner necessity located just down from my favorite massage joint. I hit them up around 7 p.m. after spending the hot early evening being twisted like a pretzel. They serve something that is so similar to pho yet so Thai at the same time. No matter how long it’s been, she always remembers our face.
It’s on Sukhumvit Soi 11, on the opposite side and end of the street from Bed Supperclub. There is a bank of ATMs. She sets up outside of there when the sun starts to set.
Thai version of Pho is called ‘gwoi-te-ol’ and is extremely popular, although I’ve never been much of a fan myself. The most common soup for ‘gwoi-te-ol’ is referred to as ‘nam-dok’ which is made out of pigs blood.
I probably will skip chillies:-)
oh i’m thai and i love Ba-mee too. But my favorite shop is out of business T T.
Luckily there are plenty of others around to get your egg noodle fix :)
They may well be my favorite too. Egg noodle with red pork. I ate it almost every day last time I was in BKK, but sometimes I opted for the duck to mix things up.
I also enjoy Pho Tai when in Vietnam, but overall for comfort I would choose the egg noodle with pork. I find egg noodle more hearty than rice noodles.
OH my god. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
When I first discovered this dish, I also eat it almost every day :)
One of my favourite street food vendors that I have visited in Thailand is on the corner of Nan nai road on the outskirts of Patong, Phuket. They served the noodles with large chunks of slow roasted pork which were delicious. I’m not sure if this is common in Thailand? As every other noodle vendor I have visited only served rather small portions of sliced meat. The street vendor was always popular with the locals but was only open on random days which I found strange. My other favourite dish from Thailand (which I don’t think can be counted as street food) is crispy pork with morning glory, I always look forward to this dish when visiting Thailand but cannot cook it between visits as I can’t find the recipe anywhere! can anyone help?
I’m pretty sure the dish you are refering to is called “Ka-nar moo gorb” – Kale veggies with crispy pork. It’s absolutly stunning – I eat it very often, but have never tried to cook it myself.
If I get the chance, I’ll get the missus to teach me and write up on how to cook it so you can have it while at home.
Great to hear from you Gavin.
Chris
Thanks Chris, that would be great! I’ve managed to master a few of Thailand’s culinary delights in my rainy corner of South Wales and would love to have “Ka-nar moo gorb” under my belt.
Love your blog by the way. Keep up the good work mate!
I love Love Love the Red pork rice! Have you tried Kao Moo Dang? Pork with red sauce on rice. To die for. My fav is in Victory Monument, a place called Microphone. Hope you are enjoying your travels!
