While I was sitting out on the terrace last night, this little fella came along out of know where. This was the best shot I got of him, out of 6 – And that got me thinking…. I want to dramatically improve my photography skills.

I currently have a Sony Cybershot point and shoot, which is nothing special. On top of that, I only know what a few of the functions do. So, not a good start really.

I guess I need to buy a decent camera, and learn by trial and error. Only problem is, I hate carrying anything bulky around with me, even a lighter in my pocket drives me nuts!

Saying that, I’m super lucky my missus likes huge bags, so I normally slip my few things in there when we go out. However, I’m not sure she will be to happy carrying around a DSLR in her bag for me, as I get enough ear ache as it is from carrying around the small camera.

So, I need a good solution. A small camera that can take some quality pictures, while bearing in mind that I’m a complete newbie at photography so don’t really want to have to learn 1,600 different settings from day one. Any ideas?

Suggestions would be much appreciated.

I would suggest a Canon Powershot. They have some macro functions to them that can capture insects, fungi, flowers, etc. in pretty good detail. We use an old one when we don’t want to lug our Canon DSLRs around Bangkok at night. They have a pretty good zoom and image stabilization for such a small camera.

Thanks for keeping such a great blog. When we are at home, you fulfill my husband and my Southeast Asia wanderlust with all of your wonderful pictures and posts.

Thanks for the camera advice Natalie, and also for your kind words. The Canon G10 Powershot look’s very promising I must say :)
