Magazine set backs
As with every project I (and I’m sure others) work on, there are always set backs. I thought I’d share the set backs we have experienced over the last few days that may cause a slight delay in the magazine launch…
- Move site to new box
Our mag was still on a shared server we got while transferring my sites onto my new dedicated server a couple of months ago. This meant moving all the files over to our new box and waiting up to for the DNS to propagate.
- Up-grading Wordpress
We have modified a lot of the core wordpress files and we hadn’t thought about how we are going to up-grade wordpress when the time comes. Well, that time came a lot sooner than we thought with Wordpress releasing an up-date over the weekend.
Luckily it wasn’t difficult at all, but I admit it did kind of get my heart racing a little faster than normal!
- Lazy writers
From experience there are not many people who can work on as a freelance. Seriously, copy writing, design or SEO - many people find it hard to motivate themselves on their own. This is exactly why I decided to start a writer’s forum where all of our writers could communicate with each other, hopefully creating an environment that will get everyone motivated. Sadly, so far only 2 people outside of the office ever log onto the forum…
So far we only have one article from a freelancer; all of the rest have come from our 2 copy writers in the office (We have our third copy writer starting at the end of next month).
This is a pain as I’ve not got as much content as I would like to have right now. The magazine will only succeed if we publish quality content on a regular basis. With this in mind, our strategies on recruiting copy writers and keeping them motivated needs to change.
- Sister and friend arriving
Both my sister and a friend unexpectedly arrived in Bangkok over the last few days. This has only affected me rather than the whole team but has meant that I’m not around as much as I would like right now.
- Internet problems
Over the last 3 weeks True Internet (our ISP) has been at its worse… we are continually logged off at least two times per hour, once every 15 minutes today! This is so frustrating. When we call them they tell us everything is fine and we may be experiencing problems due to the rain and humidity… poor excuses in my opinion.
- Girlfriend’s birthday
It was my girlfriends birthday on Saturday so this meant I wasn’t able to work on my PC for a long period of time. This is just one of those things I guess.
There you have it: our few of our headaches and problems we have been experiencing over the last week!
I would really appreciate if anyone has advice for improving any of the above areas, feel free to leave a comment with your ideas and suggestions.

Freelancers are such a pain in the a$$. I found a good programmer and a few nice designers, but I really struggle with copywriters.
I think it’s important to hit deadlines without fail. As soon as you miss one you send the wrong impression to everyone - staff, readers and advertisers.
It happens in Thailand so much but it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. Demand the best from everyone you work with and it will reap rewards in the future, I can promise that.
