Songkran 08 - Day 1

Last night I went to RCA, which stands for Royal City Avenue, for some serious water fighting action! - RCA is a street inside an industrial park with 10 (or so) Bangkok’s finest, biggest, and most popular clubs. As this is Songkran season… I wasn’t really sure what to expect as the clubs are fitted out with nice furniture and textiles.

After picking up some friends, we arrived, parked the car and headed straight for the action. The clubs, or in particular Route 66, had done an excellent job of extending the outside area to the whole length of the road, but kept the in-side of the clubs open as well. They had put huge TV screens up and had cameras all around the crowds so they could broadcast the action. With MTV one of the sponsors… I’m guessing that they will air the event soon. They also set up a DJ booth, bars, and a huge stage out side.

Every hour or so, they would hold a contest, such as who could drink 2 bottles of beer the fastest, or the one which I particularly enjoyed… was the beauty contest… They had lot’s of girls on stage, and the guy with the mic would ask each one for their names, then the crowd had to shoot water at the girls they thought was the most beautiful. The girls were pissed out of their minds… and as a result, it got pretty naughty!

It’s hard for me to put in writing how much fun the night was, it was easily the best night I’ve had since living in Thailand - nearly 3 years! Yes, it was that good!

I’m guessing there were just over 1 thousand people in this one club alone. Everyone had their hands in the air dancing to the music. Everyone had a water gun and everyone either had a beer or were sharing a bottle of whiskey. With great music ranging from Thai, Hip-hop and old school classics such as YMCA… this was a recipe for pure fun! Everyone was in a great mood, so it really did set a great atmosphere!

On the way home, I knew I had to get some more of this before the Songkran festival finished. In the morning I was due to travel up to my girlfriends family which is a 12+ hour drive away, but my girlfriend told me about her sister getting married next month and understanding that I’m not keen on the long drive… she wanted to know if we should stay in Bangkok for Songkran and head up to her families home in a month for the wedding.

It was like God was looking over me! SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I was out with my girlfriend and her mates down Silom Road, which was a lot of fun. So many people, so much water! The biggest difference from last night to Silom was the usage of Talc - which I was covered in!

In about 10 minutes I’ll be returning to RCA

Tomorrow I’m hoping I’ll be on the back of a pick up truck with my girlfriend and her mates traveling around Bangkok - I’ll keep you up-dated!
