Using Google Trends to determine which projects to work on next

If your like me and have more ideas for new web projects than resources, you may want to use Google Trends to help you decide what project to work on next.

I completely forgot about Google Trends and if I had thought to check GT before launching Juice Mag, I probably would have moved onto another project. Here are the trends for the projects I’m working on this year:

I searched for the biggest players in each niche, or if my project doesn’t have a leading site, I used the name of the niche. For Juice Mag, I used FHM which are the leading mens lifestyle publication around (as far as I know).

Blue - I’ve been working on this project since early 2007 and have already spent over $20k on it!! Hopefully this will be ready in the 4th quarter of this year.

Red - This is the project we’ll be releasing any time soon.

Green - I haven’t started this project yet but it’s been in the back of my mind for years. I’m going to wait until BuddyPress  launches to use their software. I’ve got a premium domain for this project that’s worth a few bob so can’t wait to put this into use!

Blue - This is the project that involves the naughty frog.

Obviously you can’t just use Google Trends to determine which project to work on next, but it’s defiantly worth having a play with.

How do you decide what projects to work on or which ones will wait?

Thanks Chris, this was new to me. I have about 30 projects up in the air at one time so learning to prioritize each one is important.

Currently I’m working on the site thats making me the most money. We’re getting the traffic, the affiliates but a low conversion rate so it’s a big priority to rewrite the site to improve on that.

Next I’m hoping to have 2-3 weeks tidying up half-finished projects to clear my mind of them for a bit.

Once they’re in play I’m going to be treating myself to time on the websites I’m most interested in.

You sound like everyone I know who works online, including myself. I think we will always have sites that need to be improved, sites to tidy up and so on… It’s a never ending process.
