As many of you know, I’m now fully focused on building my new media company. This will involve developing quality sites and content over the next few years.
Today I wanted to share one of the first steps I have taken in order to help keep on track of the current movements around each particular niche I am entering by using RSS feeds.
By subscribing to the right RSS feeds, you’ll be able to:
1. Keep track on what your competitors are doing
2. Find sites in your niche you didn’t know about
3. Network with related sites in your niche
4. Improve your content with new ideas you’ll be presented with
5. Update published stale content
No matter what site you have or content you are working on (even published content), you’ll no doubt be able to jot down a few targeted keywords. With these keywords you can go over to sites such as Digg, Google Blog Search, Twitter Search, Google News and other niche orientated forums/sites and get the RSS feeds for new content that appears on these sites.
It’s extremely simple… search the keywords on each of the sites listed above and look for the RSS feed link or icon. Add these to your RSS reader (I use Google Reader) into separate folders (for each content piece or site). Your RSS reader will collect any new content that appears on these engines saving you time and effort going to the individual sites direct. This will also act as a reminder whenever you log into your RSS feed that there’s always more work to be done.
This isn’t rocket science, just a small tip I’m currently using and seeing great things come out of it. Thought it’s worth sharing
Anyone got any other tips on how to keep track of what other sites and business in a particular niche are doing? If so, please share them in the comments.

I love this advice, I definitely use this along with auto-filtered google alerts for keywords. I can’t tell you how happy I am to have found your blog. I hope we’ll be able to grab a beer someday… I think we passed paths in Hanoi while I was writing a travel guide website as you suggested! Just for kicks…. I’m leaving for the Philippine to set up a company in the Cebu area in 4 weeks. I’m stoked and using your blog for inspiration! Keep it comin’! Oh… there is also a really great insider Hanoi site…. I’ll nab the URL for you this week.
Thanks for the kind words Dan. Would love to see the link for the Hanoi guide… still think there is huge opportunity there.
I’m interested in learning more about you setting up a company in Cebu… if you want to write a guest blog post, I’ll be happy to publish it. I think my readers, along with me, would find this really interesting.
Chris,
Here is the that Hanoi guide that was really useful to me when I was running my businesses from there:
